Christmas season is officially here. That means we see twinkling lights and hear carols everywhere. It also might mean we slow down to do an Advent together or watch a Christmas movie. If you want to pause—briefly—as a family this Christmas season, check back here. Every few days, we’ll post a few Bible verses to read together and a couple questions to get your family talking. (Sidenote: it gives you a taste of what to expect with God’s Story 365!)
To start, let’s look at a verse that a prophet named Isaiah wrote hundreds of years before Jesus was born. Isaiah 7:14 says, “All right then, the Lord himself will give you the sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel (which means ‘God is with us’).”
When it says God will give us a sign, it means he’ll make sure that everybody knows that Jesus isn't just any baby; he's God's Son! And guess what? Hundreds of years later, the sign God promises really happens!
Read Matthew 1:18-23 together (heads up: your kids might have a few questions).
Then talk about it:
- What are some "signs" that the Christmas season has begun?
- What sign did God give us that Jesus was his son? (You could focus on the dream, if you want. ;)
- Why did God give us a sign when Jesus was born?
