At Christmas, we talk a lot about how exciting it was that Jesus came. But not everybody felt that way. There was this king called Herod that didn’t want Jesus around at all. God had promised to send a king, so Herod was worried that Jesus was going to take his place. He wanted to be in charge!
In Matthew 2, we find out just how serious Herod was about keeping Jesus away. Read it together to see what Herod did (parents, once again, censor as you deem best!). Then talk about the situation together:
- Tell us about a time you felt like someone didn’t want you around. What did that feel like?
- Why didn’t Herod want Jesus around? What did God do to save Jesus?
- What’s one way that someone has made you feel special?
For a bonus, try to think of someone you know who might not feel wanted this Christmas. What could you do to cheer them up and help them feel loved? Try it out!
